A new official image for Toho’s Godzilla Minus One reveals fans’ best look yet at the gargantuan creature in the upcoming film.
Set to release in Japan in November with a United States premiere following on Nov. 3, 2023, Godzilla Minus One is the latest Godzilla movie made by Toho. Previously-released images and a teaser trailer have provided small glimpses at Godzilla’s return, but it’s a new full-body photo (seen above) that was unveiled on Friday that reveals a complete look at the King of the Monsters. The behemoth is just as destructive as ever, as the image showcases.
Godzilla’s arrival couldn’t have come at a worse time in Godzilla Minus One. The film is set in the aftermath of World War II during the late 1940s, when Japan was in recovery due to devastating nuclear attacks. As Toho’s logline for the film asks, “Will the devastated people be able to survive… let alone fight back?” Godzilla Minus One is written and directed by Takashi Yamazaki. The film stars Ryunosuke Kamiki, Minami Hamabe, Yuki Yamada, Munetaka Aoki, Hidetaka Yoshioka, Sakura Ando, and Kuranosake Sasaki.
“Postwar Japan has lost everything,” Yamazaki said of the film in a statement. “The film depicts an existence that gives unprecedented despair. The title Godzilla Minus One was created with this in mind. In order to depict this, the staff and I have worked together to create a setting where Godzilla looks as if ‘fear’ itself is walking toward us, and where despair is piled on top of despair.”
Toho Revives Godzilla With Godzilla Minus One
Godzilla Minus One will be the first domestic Godzilla movie release din Japan since Shin Godzilla in 2016. The film will arrive ahead of the 70th anniversary of Godzilla in 2024. Toho will be celebrating the milestone anniversary with an all-new Blu-ray box set featuring all 36 movies in the company’s Godzilla vault.
Godzilla is set to make a splash on streaming with a separate project on Apple TV+. The upcoming series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, which shares its cinematic universe with Legendary’s MonsterVerse series, is also soon to be released. The series, starring Kurt Russell and Wyatt Russell, will consist of ten episodes.
Godzilla Minus One will be released in Japan on Nov. 3, 2023, with a North American release following on Dec. 1, 2023.
