Has Been Ready For 15 Years

Cookbook Planner

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga was first conceived as an anime project and has been ready for 15 years from a story-completion point of view. The Mad Max prequel producers, Doug Mitchell, and filmmaker George Miller, confirmed they had already cracked the story before shooting the acclaimed franchise entry, Fury Road.

Per GamesRadar, Mitchell made the disclosure to Total Film, “So Furiosa was ready, in a story sense, 15 years ago,” he said. “And it’s been percolating, the way things do in George’s brain, ever since.” Miller confirmed that it was indeed the case, stating “We had finished the script of Furiosa before we shot Fury Road.” The producers first envisioned Furiosa as an anime project, previously titled The Peach, with Mahiro Maeda set to helm the film. Maeda has an extensive resume in the genre, having worked on numerous other projects, including the classic Neon Genesis Evangelion and one of the short films in The Animatrix.

Furiosa Director Discussed Casting Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth

In another interview, Miller explained that he chose Taylor-Hoy based on her performance in Edgar Wright’s Last Night in Soho. Hemsworth was not in immediate contention for the role but was impressed the director with his ideas. “Well, they are both absolutely superb,” he said. “Anya is — Edgar Wright showed me Last Night in Soho just before it was released. I saw Anya in that, and I said, ‘She’d be good for’ — and he said, ‘Do it, do it.’ Without me even telling him what it was, he said, ‘Do it. She’s great. She’s great,'” the filmmaker shared.

Miller continued, “In terms of Chris, I knew the character. I never thought of Chris until we met and talked. I realized he was somebody with a lot more [ideas] than I initially thought of him. So, I thought, ‘Well, I can’t wait to see [what he does].’ He [resonated] really well with the material, so I thought, ‘Let’s just see what he can do with it.'”

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga will arrive in theaters on May 24, 2024.
