Rebel Moon: Part Two – The Scargiver’s Ending, Explained

Cookbook Planner

As much as Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire left critics and fans feeling nonplussed, many were still intrigued and anticipating the sequel. Such is the effect of any Zack Snyder movie. This follow-up, Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver, finds Kora and her band of misfits defending the farm world of Veldt from the Imperium.

Shockingly, the sinister admiral, Noble (Ed Skrein), has been revived by the Imperium after the first movie. He susses out Kora being alive on Veldt, so he takes his forces there to get the grain back, as well as her head for the Regent, Balisarius. This leads to a fiery finale where Kora’s life is changed in massive ways.

Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver Review: Everything Is Scaled Back to Tell a Stronger Story

After a rushed first chapter, the second film in Zack Snyder’s space opera tells a stronger, coherent story — and shows the series’s true potential.

Kora and her crew get word the Imperium is coming thanks to Aris, a young soldier who has defected from Rebel Moon’s Motherworld the same way Kora and Titus did. They decide to batten down the hatches with sacks of grain. They know the Imperium’s warship, the Dreadnought, won’t fire and destroy this food supply, so they plan to use the sacks as walls. They are hoping to barter their freedom as well. Politics still go a long way in this broken universe.

Things go awry, however, when Noble sends ground soldiers to sneak in and capture hostages. His thinking is to stem any potential ambush with an ambush of his own. This way, Noble would get the grain and, most importantly, Kora. Balisarius wants her back badly, not just for being his adoptive daughter, but for how she fled after his coup. He needs to send a message about insubordination across the entire universe in this Netflix action movie.

When Gunnar realizes Kora is willing to entertain the deal, he ignores her orders for a ceasefire. She doesn’t want the farmers to suffer, but he can sense that Noble will renege on the deal. Gunnar puts aside the fact that Kora is the lead military strategist; at this moment, she is the lover he can’t lose. He rings the war bell, which causes the farmers to attack from their hidden chambers below the surface. Titus and others trained them to be soldiers, making this the ultimate test.

Sensing they’re losing men down below, the Dreadnought sends down smaller vessels. The farmers shoot and blow them up, while heroes like Nemesis slice up the foot-soldiers to protect innocents. Even Anthony Hopkins’ Jimmy — a robot who served the royal bloodline — joins the fight against Noble’s giant mech-machines. It’s all-out war and spectacle, which Snyder has shaped in his movies like Justice Leagueand 2011’s Sucker Punch. Unfortunately, there is a lot of collateral damage and mass casualties, including brave farmers like Den in the space soap opera.

Rebel Moon’s Ed Skrein Addresses Admiral Noble’s Unique Haircut

Exclusive: Ed Skrein speaks with CBR about why he won’t miss sporting Admiral Noble’s haircut after filming Rebel Moon.

Noble slaughters many farmers along the way, but decides it’s best to head to the main ship. When he learns Kora has infiltrated, he orders that the Dreadnought fire on the land. He doesn’t care if he slays his own men, or if the grain gets razed. They have Kora on board, so it’s best to get back to the Regent and win his praise. He didn’t count on Gunnar sneaking aboard, however, and loading charges of his own.

The heroes trigger an explosion, which blows up most of the ship and enemies. As it falls to the ground, Kora gets her fight with Noble. He pins her down, however, adamant that she must fear him. It gives Gunnar enough time to impale him. Kora ensures Noble won’t be repaired like last time by beheading him. She flies off with a wounded Gunnar, eager to continue the fight on the ground and save his people — the family she adores for taking her in.

Rebel Moon Star Reveals Romantic Arc for Kora in The Scargiver

Actress, Sofia Boutella, reveals that her character Kora pursues a romantic interest in the sequel film, Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver.

As fate would have it, some of Rebel Moon’s heroes die. Firstly, Doona Bae’s Nemesis perishes when she gets stabbed saving civilians. She doesn’t mind, however. She finally found purpose after hunting down members of the Imperium for murdering her family. Hearing the rest of Kora’s crew lost loved ones to the villains as well over the years motivated her greatly. In that sense, Nemesis sees this finale as destiny and a higher calling. She saved many kids in this firefight, so spiritually, she got to be a mother again.

Sadly, Gunnar’s gunshot wound is mortal. Kora tries to tend to the damage, but Gunnar fades quickly. He does get to see Devra Bloodaxe’s rebels arrive in their fighter jets to finish off the rest of the Imperium troops. He dies knowing the rebellion has grown. It’s heartbreaking, however, as he and Kora profess their love for each other before he passes. Kora is crushed, knowing she won’t ever get a happy ending due to the Imperium. Gunnar represented a shot at paradise.

Kora found her humanity again thanks to this soulmate. He knew her secrets — that she helped Balisarius with the coup — so she saw his forgiveness, compassion and empathy as the key to atonement. Kora weeps at the ensuing cremation, where Veldt honors its fallen heroes. A guilty Kora does confess her secret to everyone. She is Arthelais, the hand that Balisarius used to kill Princess Issa after the villain murdered Issa’s parents and took the throne. Arthelais fled when Balisarius tried to frame her for everything. This is what led to her taking on the Kora identity and hiding out as a fugitive.

Titus admits he knew this all along. As a fellow defector, he could sense it. He lost his troops when they turned against the Imperium after they were ordered to commit genocide of a democracy-seeking village. Since then, Titus became a drunk, wrestled his own demons, and sought redemption. He found it with Kora’s squad. Surprisingly, he admits Kora has a chance to complete her U-turn and make things right due to a person from her past being alive.

Zack Snyder Reveals What It Will Take for Rebel Moon 3 to Be Greenlit

Rebel Moon franchise helmer Zack Snyder hints at what it will take for a third film installment of his space opera series.

Titus admits Issa is alive. Rebel Moon Part One showed her having healing powers, which Balisarius feared. Rebel Moon Part Two reveals that when Kora shot the girl, some of this mystical energy was seeded out into the atmosphere. Admittedly, Titus doesn’t explain how she is still alive or how he knows this. But he is keen on one last stand. Once they find the princess and restore her to the throne, they can be true heroes again.

With the Bloodaxe legion ready to serve as well, Kora has a second chance. She can fix things with the bloodline she helped tear apart, and liberate the galaxy from the tyranny of the Motherworld. This nods to the Chosen One concept seen with the likes of Luke Skywalker. Rebel Moon Part Two ends here, setting Kora out on another revenge quest. This time, it has a lot more personal and professional energy to it.

She wants to avenge all those who died, especially Gunnar. Her legend is sure to resonate throughout the galaxy. Ultimately, Kora can leave her fake name behind, become Arthelais again, and destroy the Regent who took her in after slaughtering her clan. It is due to come full-circle, with all space roads pointing to Balisarius and Snyder’s take on Star Wars’ Empire.

Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver is now streaming on Netflix.
