James Gunn Addresses DC’s Scrapped Green Lantern Series

Cookbook Planner

James Gunn has commented on the fate of the Lanterns series that was previously in the works at Max. He has reaffirmed that the version of the series that was set to star Finn Wittrock and Jeremy Irvine is no longer happening.

Though not many details were shared about the plot, it had been reported that DC’s Lanterns series would be following multiple versions of Green Lantern. Wittrock would have been playing Guy Gardner while Irvine would co-star as Alan Scott. Following James Gunn and Peter Safran taking charge at DC Studios, it was revealed that there are plans to make a Green Lantern series for the DCU. However, as reminded a fan on Threads, this is a totally separate project, and though the planned show with Wittrock was scrapped, Gunn is wishing the actor well.

James Gunn Fuels Speculation of Krypto Appearing in Superman Reboot

A cryptic tease by James Gunn has some DC fans convinced that it means Superman’s best friend will appear in the DCU film.

“I didn’t think it was in the DCEU, but it was before my time,” Gunn said of the scrapped Lanterns project, responding to a fan who said Wittrock was done dirty. “That said, I think Finn’s a [talented] guy and he’ll be okay! Writers, directors, actors have projects fall through every day. We’ve all had it happen many times. It’s not being ‘done dirty’, it’s a part of the job.”

James Gunn Subtly Teases the DCU’s Lanterns

Gunn would also share a more subtle tease about the DCU’s own Green Lantern project. When asked to provide an update, he responded with three dancing man emojis without adding any further context. This could mean that the show will take the approach of following multiple Green Lanterns, perhaps three. Gunn previously shared how the show would be following at least two of the more well-known versions of the character.

‘I’m Pretty Excited’: Zack Snyder Reveals What He Hopes to See From James Gunn’s DCU

Exclusive: Zack Snyder comments on what he’s hoping to see from the new DCU created by James Gunn and Peter Safran.

“This is a story of a couple of Green Lanterns John Stewart and Hal Jordan,” Gunn previously said about the series. “We have a few other Lanterns peppered in there but this is really a terrestrial based TV show which is almost like True Detective with a couple of Green Lanterns who are space cops watching over Precinct Earth in it they discover a terrifying mystery that ties into our largest story of the DCU.”

Gunn will also be featuring the Guy Gardner Green Lantern character in Superman with Nathan Fillion in the role. Perhaps he will also be joining the planned series to represent the third man Gunn alluded to with his teasing emojis.

Superman will be released in theaters on July 11, 2025.
